A 60th-birthday celebration should be a time for peaceful reflection, a time for taking stock while looking forward to a peaceful, mature old age freed from the daily grind in the trenches. Israel should be so lucky. It will spend its 60th birthday the way it has spent every day of every year since its 1948 founding on this very day — fighting for its survival against a host of violent, undemocratic foes who seek its total obliteration. Many happy returns are nowhere in sight.
